Dubbed the “silver to Bitcoin’s gold”, Litecoin is a speedy, lightweight version of the world's most popular cryptocurrency. It made headlines in 2020 when PayPal announced that it would accept payments in the native token Litecoin (LTC).
Litecoin is an open-source blockchain with source code forked from Bitcoin’s code. It was developed in 2011 by Charlie Lee in response to Bitcoin mining becoming inaccessible to the average user. It remains one of the most correlated coins to Bitcoin’s price and was chosen by the Lightning Network for the first Lightning transaction.
Rather than a competitor to Bitcoin, Litecoin sees itself as a “proven medium of commerce complementary to Bitcoin.” It can be used for speedy transactions of small amounts at a low cost. It was one of the first cryptocurrencies to follow Bitcoin and has survived several bear markets to remain in the top 30 cryptocurrencies by market cap. The announcement of the Litecoin VISA card has increased the number of active users of the network.
